The Audio Of Intimacy

Music may soothe the savage beast, but it can also get that beast moving. Music enhances almost every experience, including those tender moments when just the two of you want to be alone. Everybody has their Barry White CD next to the massage oil. These are the editor's best picks to get you and your lover into the mood.

Best albums to make love to...

  • Barry White's All-Time Greatest Hits
Barry White's soulful voice will take you and your partner to new heights. When you mention romance and music in the same sentence he is the only one that comes to mind.

  • Bon Jovi / "Cross Roads"
Oh, the drama of the '80s. This greatest hits collection is saturated in melodrama, and isn't that just how we love it? From the foreplay of "Livin' On a Prayer" to the longing of "Always" and "Bed of Roses," this is just what the doctor ordered for those long nights of passion.

  • Harry Connick Jr. / "Blue Light, Red Light"
The man responsible for keeping 'Ole Blue Eyes alive in voice and Big Band alive in song is at his finest here. The title track is a great way to kick off the night, and the album quickly flows into Connick at his most passionate. His tribute to his wife, "Jill," has Connick singing the praises of the love of his life in that way only Connick can seem to pull off.

  • Toni Braxton
The allure of her melodic tenor is enough to get any couple hot and bothered. Pair that with the ambiance tracks like "Breathe Again" and "You Mean the World to Me" seem to create and let the games begin.

  • Enigma / The Screen Behind the Mirror
Classical music is to techno as Audrey Hepburn is to Madonna. Each are oddly erotic, but for vastly different reasons. But what if you got them both in the same room ... heck, on the same track? Enigma embodies what mystery should be: sexy, seductive, alluring and downright explosive.

  • Anita Baker / Rhythm of Love
For many of the same reasons Toni Braxton is so sulty, Baker's last studio release has the singer at her strongest. When Baker sings "Open your arms, close your eyes / Hearts will harmonize / Making music in your arms" on the title track, it's as if she's luring you into a secret rendezvous. By the stirring finale, Baker's take on "My Funny Valentine," you're putty in each other's hands.

  • Ladies & Gentlemen, The Best of George Michael
This two disc comes with two options. For the feet (dance tracks) and for the heart (ballads). And, depending on your mood, both can set the mood just right. I mean really. What perfect night wouldn't benefit from a rendition of "I Want Your Sex"? Just do yourself a favor and skip over "Father Figure." Yikes

  • Billie Holliday / The Gold Collection
Is there any need to explain? Holliday's voice is simply enchanting set against some of the great jazz and blues standards of yesteryear. Provided you skip over this collection's first track ("Fine and Mellow" starts out with the lyrics "My man don't love me ..."), you're in for one incredible journey.

  • Celine Dion / All the Way ... A Decade of Song .
It may seem cliche to include Dion on this list. But when you consider this voice is behind some of the most fervent songs of the '90s ("The Power of Love," "If You Asked Me To," "My Heart Will Go On"), how can she not make the cut. And for a bonus, Dion covers Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." This is one voice that truly crashes through the glass ceiling of passion every time.

  • Marvin Gaye / "Midnight Love & the Sexual Healing Sessions"
Five. Count them, five completely different versions of "Sexual Healing" on this two disc offering. How can you go wrong? This album is packed with musical experimentation (many of the tracks are previously unreleased works in progress), so why not settle down with that special someone and do some experimenting of your own.

and, for the kink in you.

  • Samantha Fox / Greatest Hits
If ever you should feel a bit kinky (and don't be ashamed, most everybody does), pop this baby in. Think about some of the titles if you will. Naughty Girls (Need Love Too), Touch Me (I Want Your Body), Do Ya, Do Ya (Wanna Please Me) and the absolute best, Hurt Me, Hurt Me (But the Pants Stay On). Anybody got a belt?
